Abstract:

Aim: Investigation of the shaping abilities of ProTaper Next (PTN; Dentsply-Maillefer) and XP Endo Shaper (XPS; FKG, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) systems for isthmus region and total root canal space using micro-computed tomographic imaging. Methodology: Twenty matched extracted human mandibular molars with Type II mesial canals were scanned preoperatively and postoperatively after instrumentation with either PTN or XPS. Real time torque values and total duration of time required for the instrumentation were recorded. Changes in volume, touched surface area and accumulated hard tissue debris (AHTD) were determined for both isthmus region and total canal space. Due to difference in preoperative volume and root canal surface area of specimens (Mann Whitney U test, p<0.05), preop-postop difference values were used for evaluations for total canal space. Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests were used for normality assumption. For analysis of normally and independently distributed data (touched surface and volume difference) t test was used. Mann-Whitney test was used in independent groups without normality assumption. Results: There was no difference found in the volume of removed dentine, touched surface area and AHTD for instrument systems in isthmus region (P>0.05). Changes in touched surfaces area, volume of removed dentin and AHTD was more in PTN for total canal space (p<0.05). Higher torque levels and less preparation time recorded for PTN. No relation was found between torque loads, the volume of removed dentin, area of touched walls and AHTD (p>0.05). Conclusion: None of the system yielded root canal and isthmus region completely free from AHTD. Touched surface and AHTD was more for PTN in total canal space. No relation was found between torque level and AHTD (p>0.05).
