Abstract:

Success of obturation of lateral oblique perforations of roots using different MTA preparations were evaluated in this ex vivo study by using resin blocs and extracted teeth. MTA prepared either with distilled water or propylene glycol+water. Sonic and ultrasonic energy and hand compaction was used for obturation. The study was planned in two parts. In the first part perforation canal oblique to main canal was prepared in resin blocs. Then most suitable frequency and application time was assessed for ultrasonic and sonic energy for the penetration of MTA preparations. Chosen time periods were 4 and 8 seconds and high and low frequency for ultrasound and low frequency was applied for sonic system to seal the canals. Evaluations were made by the measurement of penetration depth, unfilled/filled canal proportion and radiopacity. In the second part best frequency and time defined for the application to MTA preparations in the resin blocks were chosen as a application parameter for extracted teeth. 60 single rooted premolar teeth with straight canals were decoronated and root canals were prepared by using Protaper instruments and after biomechanical preparation apical parts were filled sectionally by using AH26 paste and single cone gutta percha. After then 0.5 mm. diameter perforation canals were prepared in the middle/cervical part of roots established to invariable angle to main canal using specially designed perforator system for the study. More penetrations, unfilled/filled canal proportion and radioopacity were assesed in groups prepared with propylene glycol except MTA+water group compacted with ultrasonics for the measurement of penetration depth. However difference were not significiant in this group and unfilled/filled canal proportion and radiopacity were lower than propylene glycol group. Success of sonic system were higher than ultrasonics and hand compaction for both MTA preparations. Best group was MTA+propylene glycol+water preparation applied with sonic system considering penetration depth, unfilled/filled canal proportion and radiopacity. Better results were found for ultrasound groups than hand compacted specimens for both MTA preparations by considering all evaluation parameters.
