Özet

Purpose: In our study, we aimed to compare the effects of frequently suggested custom-made and commercially available static wrist splints on grip strength. Material and methods: Demographic data of 73 university students with the mean age of 21.75 +/- 1.53 years were recorded. Standard, lateral and palmar grip strength of the subjects were evaluated without orthoses, with custom made and commercially available othoses while the subjects were seated in the test position suggested by American Hand Therapists Association. Results: Grip strength was found to be greater without orthoses than with both of the orthoses. When the orthoses are compared grip strength results were greater with commercially available orthoses (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to the results, although grip strength was found to be higher without orthoses when compared with the measurements with orthoses, in occasions splint use is necessary in symptoms and disorders affecting hand and grip strength, loose of grip strength.
