Özet

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of melatonin as a free radical scavenger for prevention of ischemia / reperfussion injury after testicular torsion. Torsion, detorsion and sham operations were all performed on the left testis through standard ilioinguinal incision. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activities were significantly decreased in the ischemia group and ischemia-reperfussion group compared with values of control group. In contrast, SOD and GSHPx activities were highest in the melatonin treated group. There were no significant differences between SOD and GSHPx activities of allopurinol-treated group, melatonin-treated group and those of control group. However, SOD activities were increased in the allopurinol-treated group compared with values of control group, but GSHPx activities were decreased. Our results showed that treatment with melatonin might provide significant rescue of testicular function after acute experimental torsion and detorsion.
