Özet:

Aim: The study was carried out to determine the effects of dry heat and dry cold application applied before blood sampling in school age children (7-12 years old) on pain, anxiety and fear levels.

Materials (Patients) and Methods: The study was conducted between June 2021- January 2021 in a parallel group randomized controlled experimental design. The study was conducted with 117 school-age (7-12 years old) children who applied to the Gulhane Training and Research Hospital Pediatric Blood Collection Outpatient Clinic. Children were assigned to dry heat application (n=38), dry cold application (n=39) and control group (n=40) by simple randomization. Data were collected using the Child-Family Descriptive Information Form, Wong Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale, Child Fear Anxiety Scale and Medical Procedures Fear Inventory. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics, Kruskal Wallis H test, Dunn test, Yates correction and Pearson Chi-Square test statistics were used. A p<0,05 level was considered statistically significant.

Results: In the study, it was found that children who were treated with dry heat and dry cold before blood sampling experienced less pain (p<0,05). It was found that the anxiety of the children in the dry heat treatment group was lower than the control group (p<0,05). According to the children's Medical Procedure Fear Scale Operational Fear sub-dimension score median scores (12 in the dry hot application group, 13 in the dry cold application group, 12,5 in the control group), procedural fear was found to be lower in the dry hot application group.

Conclusion: As a result, two different non-pharmacological physical methods used in the study reduced pain during blood sampling. Dry heat application reduced anxiety during blood sampling. It is important to use non-pharmacological physical methods in pain management during blood sampling.
