Özet

Objective: In this survey, we aimed to evaluate the dimension of defensive medicine applications among anesthesiologist working in Turkey, with regard to their experience in the profession and their academic titles. Method: After taking the approval of the Ethics Committee of our University, our sample was made up of the anesthesiologist who were working at University, Private and State Hospitals, and attended TARK congress in October 2009. In this survey anesthetists were asked 21 Multiple choice questions of defensive medicine concerning age, gender, employment period, marital status, and the type of the Institution they work. Results: Out of 650 attendants who we contacted, 425 of them accepted to participate in the survey. To avoid malpractice allegations, 65% of anesthetists who participated in the inquiry stated that more detailed medical information was explained to the patients. 80% of them admitted that they kept more detailed data, and 84% stated that stated that more importance was given to informed consent. It was understood that the physicians with less experience needed more imaging tests from complicated patients to avoid being proceeded, and it was also understood that the more experience, the less hesitation they had. Conclusion: It was found that anesthetists' malpractice concerns were diminished when they gained more experience.
