Abstract

Magnesium is the second most common intracellular cation and plays an important role in the activities of more than 300 enzymes. Thus, magnesium is used in cardiology for both prevention and treatment of arrhythmias and ischemic heart disease. In the patients with coronary heart disease, especially during acute myocardial infarction, it has been used for systemic vasodilation, coronary dilatation, antithrombocytic effects as well as beneficial effects on reperfusion injury and free radical oxygen production. However, there are many controversial results in the previous studies about the use of magnesium in acute myocardial infarction. Recent large studies did not show any beneficial effect of magnesium on mortality and ventricular arrhythmias during acute myocardial infarction. In this paper, use of magnesium with useful properties in cardiology is pointed. Copyright © 2005 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
