In vitro susceptibilities of 52 clinical isolates of Brucella melitensis to 14 antimicrobials were determined with the agar dilution technique. Four quinolones (ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and pefloxacin) were tested. The most active quinolone was found to be ciprofloxacin (MIC90 0.5 mg/L). Tetracycline and doxycycline showed good activity than rifampicin, streptomycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) and erythromycin. 13 strains of Brucella melitensis were inhibited by erythromycin at concentrations 32 mg/L. The MICs values of ceftriaxone, ceftizoxime and cefotaxime were ranged between 0.03 and 8 mg/L, with ceftizoxime being the most active agent in this group. Cefuroxime was active at concentrations between 1 and 64 mg/L.
