Özet

Aim: The aim of this study was the evaluation of clarity and content of the standard information consent form used for general anesthesia. Materials and Methods: Following university ethical committee approval, 200 patients scheduled for general anesthesia in the neuroradiology unit were included in the study. The patients were given the standard informed consent form for general anesthesia the day before surgery. On the day of the intervention the patients were asked to complete a questionnaire designed to collect data concerning their thoughts on the clarity of the form and additional information demands. Data were analyzed using ki-stjuare, t-test and AJVOVA, p<0.05 was taken as the limit of statistical significance. Results: Age and previous anesthesia experience effected neither the patients' ability to understand and recall information, nor their demand for further information. On the other hand, advanced age and low education levels caused a decrease in the ability to understand the form (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion the standard written informs consent forms have adequate content and clarity of understanding and recall by patients. Additional audiovisual tools, as well as one-on-one verbal information may be useful at elderly and low education level patient groups.
