Comparıson of wound healing and the evaluation of blood neurotensin levels on second and third degree burns on surgically denervated dorsal areas of rats

Non-healing burn wounds are also known to impair wound healing, especially among patients who are at risk of thermal injury. Neurotensın is a neuropetide and peptide hormone, involved in inflammatory and epithelial processes and little is known on the role of neurotensın in wound contraction and marginal epithelial migration during burn healing under denervation conditions. The clinical management of burn recovery requires an understanding of the interaction of neural signaling. The purpose of the study was to measure the effects of sensory denervation on the pathological healing of second-degree and third-degree burn wounds and to find out the ensuing alterations in the levels of neurotensın in the systemic blood. The males 40 Wistar albino rats were separated into denervated (T5-T7 transection) and innervated groups, which were then subjected to either second or third degree contact burns. On Days 3, 7, 14, and 21 histopathological parameters (inflammation, epithelialization, collagen formation) were rated, while blood neurotensin was measured only 2 h post-burn using ELISA. Pathology showed that there was statistically significant higher recovery of burns in innervated groups. On Day 21, the level of epithelialization was much lower in the denervated third-degree burn group than in the innervated controls (Chi-Square p < 0.05). There was also a significant decrease in the collagen formation in denervated third-degree wounds. The difference in blood neurotensın change was significantly greater in denervated groups indicating an unstable systemic response. Innervation plays an important role in ensuring the best healing of burns, supporting wound contraction, marginal epithelial migration, and semi-quantitative collagen formation scores and denervation causes evident deficit, especially in severe burns.
