ABSTRACT

Background: Childhood hearing loss can negatively affect language development, communication, and social interaction. Early diagnosis, hearing aid use, and special education support are essential for improving outcomes. In this process, parents play a key role in supporting their children’s development. Therefore, examining the acceptance levels of parents of children who use hearing aids is important for understanding family involvement and improving intervention programs. Aim:The aim of this study is to determine the acceptance levels of parents of children who use hearing aids and to evaluate these levels using the Parental Acceptance of Children with Special Needs Scale. Methods: The study was conducted with parents of children who use hearing aids and attend special education centers. In the research, a Demographic Information Questionnaire and the Parental Acceptance of Children with Special Needs Scale were administered to the parents. A total of 13 parents of children using hearing aids participated in the study. Results:The ages of the participating parents ranged from 27 to 55 years. Among the participants, 10 were female and 3 were male. When the educational levels of the parents were examined, it was found that 6 had a university degree, 4 had graduated from high school, and 3 had graduated from middle school. Participants were asked to complete a scale consisting of seven items. The findings indicated that parents generally gave high scores to all items on the scale. Discussion and Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that parents are willing to seek professional support in order to support their children's development and tend to emphasize their children's positive characteristics. It was determined that parents love their children unconditionally, make efforts to meet their emotional needs, and strive significantly for their children's success. In this context, it is considered important to integrate parental support and information programs into studies aimed at the diagnosis of children with hearing loss and their referral to special education. Additionally, the development of follow-up and support programs for families during this process is recommended.
