Sedative medicinal plants are an interesting alternative to drugs such as benzodiazepines in the treatment of sleep troubles and insomnia because of their safety and the low risk of addiction. Numerous recently published studies led to a better understanding of the real activity of these plants and of their possible mechanism of action. Plants that are traditionally used in France to reduce anxiety and induce sleep are presented here and currently available scientific data are reviewed. © 2007 Elsevier Masson SAS.
