Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the relation between manual muscle strength and functional level in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Material and methods: Forty-three patients (25 DMD and 18 SMA) with the mean age 9.62±2.69 were included in the study. The muscle strength of the patients was evaluated with Modified Medical Research Council (MMRC) scale; regional and total muscle strength scores were recorded. Timed performance tests consisted of rolling from supine to prone, standing up from sitting, 10 meter walk and ascending 5 stairs. The functional level was evaluated with WeeFIM. The relation between manual muscle strength, timed performance tests and WeeFIM was statistically examined. Results: A significant relation was found between total muscle strength score and WeeFIM (Spearman rho= 0.572, (p<0.001). Also there were significant relation between total muscle strength score and rolling from supine to prone, standing up from sitting and ascending 5 stairs [Spearman rho= -0.427 (p=0.006), -0.347 (p=0.038), -0.451 (p=0.008)] and between WeeFIM score and rolling from supine to prone [Spearman rho= -0.446, (p:0.004)]. Conclusion: We concluded that WeeFIM was found related with manual muscle strength score and that timed performance tests could be used in neuromuscular disorders units where DMD and SMA patients are treated.
